CACDP Level 1 Certificate in British/Irish Sign Language (BSL1/ISL1)

50 hours over 25 weeks of 2 hour sessions.

This qualification is designed to enable learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topic that involve simple everyday language use. The specification has been designed to be consistent with the National Language Standards at Level 1.

Candidates must achieve all three units below for the full qualification. Units may be taken separately and in any order, although Unit 1 BSL101 is designed as an introduction to the language and should therefore be completed first. Assessment is built into the learning time of each unit.

BSL101 Introduction to BSL: Introductory skills providing a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL.

BSL102 Conversational BSL: Skills for simple predictable conversations in BSL in relation to actitivites at home eg using numbers, describing interests and commenting on the weather.

BSL103 BSL at School, College or Work: Skills for simple predictable conversations in BSL in relation to actitivites at work/school/college eg describing the building, actitivities carried out, transport used, directions.

Examination: There are three examinations at the end of this course, the Introduction to BSL unit is assesed by way of an internal practical skills exam. The Conversational BSL and the BSL at School, College or Work Units both involve externally assessed practical skills examinations.
