CACDP Level 2 Certificate in British/Irish Sign Language (BSL2/ISL2)

120hrs over 60 weeks of 2hr sessions (2 years)

Entry Requirements:

  • Foundation in Deaf Studies Certificate Level 1.
  • British Sign Language Level 1 (before September 2003) Deaf Awareness & Communication Tactics Certificates.
  • Courses will be tailored to include Components of the Foundation Certificate for Learners with BSL Level 1.
  • BSL Level 2 & Post Level 2 BSL experience of approximately one year, preferably in a work or similar environment with Deaf People is required.

Applications are assessed via interview with WDPC Deaf Assessors.

This qualification is designed to enable learners to develop an ability to communicate with Deaf people using BSL in a range of familiar contexts, particpating in longer and more open-ended exchanges than at Level 1. The course will develop functional communication in BSL about a range of real life, routing daily experiences. The learner will be able to deal with most routing language tasks and have sufficient grasp of grammar to cope with some non-routine tasks.The specification has been designed to be consistent with the National Language Standards at Level 2.

The content of the award will contain four themes; About You, Eating and Drinking, Shopping and Spending and Travel. In order to develop a suitable range of vocabulary for this level, all learners will study the first theme and two from the remaining three.

Candidates must achieve all three units below for the full qualification. Units may be taken separately and in any order, although Unit BSL201 is designed to build on vocabulary from level 1 and should therefore be completed first. Assessment is built into the learning time of each unit.

BSL201 Receptive BSL: Skills for understanding language in everyday situations expressed through simple sentence structures and set phrases in the form of a narrative.

BSL202 Productive BSL: Skills for demonstrating use of routine language in everyday situations expressed through simple sentence structures and set phrases in the form of a presentation.

BSL203 BSL Conversational Skills: Skills for demonstrating the ability to hold a routine conversation by using and understanding language expressed through simple sentence structures and set phrases, expressing views and/or clarifyng understanding.

Examination: There are three examinations one for each unit at the end of this course. All examinations are externally assessed and involve practical skills testing.

Progression: Students will be able to progress onto the NVQ level 3 units in BSL programme.
